The Different Kinds of Pizza and Their Taste

Many people do not realize that there are many different kinds of pizza styles and they way it is prepared. Depending on what region of the country you are living in, you will find pizza prepared slightly different. Someone living in California most likely will not have the same pizza experience as someone living in New York. Before you get overwhelmed by the possibilities of different pizza types, let me explain a few.

The first and probably the most famous of pizza types is the New York style pizza. This pizza in very thin and has a very small crust. It is best served with only 1-2 toppings and it is traditionally eaten by folding it in half. If you are ever in a New York pizza shop and you over hear someone saying, “I’d like a regular pie.” then you have just heard someone order a plain cheese pizza. New Yorkers have their own lingo for ordering pizza and it might take you some time to get used to if you are ordering New York pizza for the first time.

Another type of pizza is California Style. California style is much different than any other type of pizza because of its unusual toppings. A traditional California style pizza is much thicker than New York Style pizza and the crust also makes up a much larger part of this pizza. New York style pizza is best eaten plain or with only 1-2 toppings, but for California Style Pizza this is not the case. Due to California’s rich agricultural resources, lots of vegetables and unique meats are used for its toppings. A very common type of California Style Pizza is the White Pizza. The White Pizza from California Pizza Kitchen features a combination of Mozzarella, Fontina, Ricotta, Parmesan and Pecorino Romano cheeses with fresh sauteed spinach garlic and applewood bacon. And from my personal experience, it is delicious. I always say, more toppings the better.

One of the least know types is the Old Forge Style. Old Forge Style features a medium to thin, crispy crust and is typically baked in an old brick style oven. The brick oven gives it a rich, authentic Sicilian flavor which can’t be matched. But one of the more unique items about this style is that the dough is not formed into a hand tossed circle. The dough is actually spread out into a square or rectangle formation. This gives it a much different shape than the typical image that people have of pizza.

So as you can see, there are many types and variations of pizza. If you live in New York then you most likely like plain cheese pizza “pies” or if you are from California, then you most likely love a thick crusted pizza with lots of unusual toppings. Depending on whether you like thin crust, thick crust, plain cheese or toppings piled high, there is a pizza out there for everyone. When it comes to pizza, pizza pies the limit.
